“Some of us have walked this way before & will walk this way again; we will always seek out and find our true kin, our ‘family’ to walk with them time & time again”

“Thaddaeus was the female apostle of Malak; a part of the very first council. She has a Craft/energy line that continues on this earthly plane to this very day…..”

From the moment I first set eyes on him, when our eyes briefly met as he passed by and our gazes melded, I knew then that he was special. I had no doubt in my mind that he was everything that those whom knew him said he was, but little did I know at that time just how close we would become and of how our lives would forever remain entwined.

That deep connection was confirmed when I was asked to become part of his carefully chosen circle.  He had come down from on high after being on his own for prayer and solitude. His choice was made for those he wished as his apostles; his ambassadors in the physical world and I was to be one of those whom he would teach and share the truths with. I in my turn would protect him and continue teaching his truths long after this existence in his earthly body was no more. He taught me the truths of time and of creation; of the reason for his own existence and I knew that if the patterns of the universe were to exist, then our energies would once again meet in the future, recognize and know each other. I thus became his messenger; an ambassador of his teachings whilst out in the world and eventually and with great honour, I received the ‘K.e.y to the Kingdom’.

Had I know him as child? Some say I was related, a cousin; my mother and his mother the virgin, being cousins and so we may have played together as children, maybe if so then destiny was forged right then and there and a path laid out for me. But what is kin? For I was later to learn it was far more than an earthly connection. I eventually gave up everything that I knew in order to follow him and to learn his teachings of the truths, becoming one of the chosen ones; his bonded ones. He walked within the world of men, seen by many yet truly known by only a very few, as to whom he really was and the true origins of his birth. And so I was at his side, patiently learning and always thirsting for knowledge and willing to share, until the very end of that particular earthly stage. As one always eager for his words and teachings, i was to sup from the chalice of life at his table as he shared his blood, as he shared his life and I knew my body and heart would never hunger because of it. With my brother Simon I was there to the very end of that earthly phase.

It seems I took upon myself the courage to ask him why he did not manifest himself to the whole world, to which he replied to me that if anyone loves me he will keep his word and my father will love him, and we will come to him and make our abode with him. He who does not love me will not keep my words which sadly always proved to be so true. As always the teachings of the truths and why he was here among us were built upon a strong foundation of love and trust; a love and trust which went both ways.

I was always very wary of those who would claim to preach in His name, for they knew nothing of the universe and lead others astray, yet they fooled me not and I knew that time would reveal all; all the false prophets would be doomed and destroyed. Likewise though within the realms of Angels too I knew that there were those that did not keep their word and sought that which was forbidden to them, seeking the way of strange flesh which should not be their way at all and I knew this would be their undoing and they too would be held in darkness until the day of judgement came. To live in truth we must all be filled with wisdom and not as an empty cloud filled not with rain or a late autumn tree devoid of fruit. I knew the future to come, I saw it clearly and knew the fruit was due to fall from the trees leaving them barren.

Some say I was a martyr, had a courageous heart and yet I was only doing that which I had been taught to do; that which was now bound also within my own heart.  I was taught the truths of the earthly plain by him and of that which had bought him from worlds afar to these fertile lands; he spoke of his own world across the universe and his own origins of which I knew he shared with so few. Yet after all this time the truths of the world still go unheard across time and space and across the very plains of physical existence. He bestowed upon me, together with the other apostles, the other chosen ones, the flame of the Holy Spirit; we drank from the chalice of life with him and thus the divine light was forever to blaze above my head.

I was always to stand by his side, albeit often in the shadows at the edge of the group and often unnoticed by society; for that was my way, yet all his words became a complete part of me and a part of who I was to become. He led the Way and I in time became the Way also. I was close by his side on so many occasions, some written down while others not so and I witnessed him heal the sick on many occasions, guide the misfortunate ones and bestow the teachings of truth upon others. I even saw him occasionally despair at the thoughtless actions of mankind and make his feelings well and truly known, but maybe it was only those of us truly close to him that really knew how he felt.

I loved to be by myself to write down my words; the words that came straight from my heart for I knew that in a future time there would be those who would come along and read my words and would understand. I wrote my words for them. To this day many of my words still remain a mystery, my gospel truths unseen, hidden within time and attributed to others or simply disregarded, yet I know in my heart that those who find them will read and truly know.

Many writers and scholars have confused me, maybe on purpose especially the gospel writers, with Judas, not the Iscariot one I hasten to add, and with Lebbaeus and Jude also and at times they seem unsure of whom my parents and siblings were but does that really matter? One must ask what’s in a name and for what deeper reason did the scriptures appear confused; were they concealing something on purpose? For we must always dig deep to find that which we seek. I in my heart know of the truth of whom I am and why the truth has been hidden and diluted for so long within the world of men. Many usually great and renowned artists too, have been content to see me forever as a man and that is fine, for those who know me, thus know me as I truly am and it is forever the word of the truths that I have been trusted with that are important and not the teller.

At times I was greatly challenged because of who I really was, yet in time the people began to see me differently, honoured me and came to me. My challenges often gave rise to me being perceived as a martyr, though I was always following my heart and the heart of he who had chosen me and to whom I had freely relinquished my soul. I wish not for the populace to worship or venerate me, for I only wished for them to listen to the true words and to find The Way for themselves and to be awakened from the everlasting darkness of lies in which they reside and see the true beauty of the Light.

My journey was always one of forever seeking knowledge and I always had a hundred questions to ask. I needed to understand fully why some can ‘see’ while others can not and in time my knowledge expanded and the answers became clear to me. I further asked of him how it was that he manifested himself to us and not unto the world at large. But all things happen in time and with love, and time is not always the right time so we held our understandings within, until a time to come in the future allowed us all to stand together upon the shores of time once more.

Life after he was no longer within the physical earthy realms was taken up with sharing the truths of his teachings and with spreading his Word. His Divine Spirit and influence were always with me; that part of him never, ever left me and in that knowledge came great courage and great strength. I preached his truths all over the world that was then known to me; Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia and Libya to name but a few and it is written that I took the Word of his teachings to Armenia.  Did I end up as a martyr with my brother Simon in Persia as the scriptures state or is my tale still unfolding? But what is certain is that a ‘Jude’ and a ‘Simon’ are to this day venerated together on October 28th, both dying together as martyrs in the eyes of the world. For this date is indeed a time of endings and beginnings and hides a tale of rebirth.

There is much confusion as to my earthly remains and as I said previously what’s in a name, so then by the same token, what is in the importance of my earthly remains or anyone’s for that matter, for it is within the wisdom of the teachings I shared and in the love in my heart that I wish to be remembered. For He that has taught and guided me; it is His truth and it is His beauty that will be forever bound within my breast like a bright shinning star upon the black waters of creation. For He that was then shall be again and those that were by His side shall rise again within the realms of time and so shall a telling be complete and our place among the stars once more affirmed. A cycle will complete within the land of time and prophecies told will come to be for those who walk The Way.

‘The Keeper of Scrolls’

Prophesy of the Horn

Into darkness I will fade Prophesy of the Horn
Into a night that man has made
but through that gloom shall gleam the sun
When I am lost; and again am won.

Release! Release! I call to thee
In new lands across the sea
Let another, on narrow pathways, come to me.
Furthest and Highest, yet not beyond reach.
Choose thou well a path that will teach:
How the sunken is raised and emptiness is filled
And a wandering heart can finally be stilled.

Seek the Great Stone! Mark it well, with a sign
And those who see it shall know it is mine
And seeing shall ponder and certainly know
As the Ancients have writ “As above, so Below

And I shall guard the source of Greatness
Waiting by a teardrop
From neither joy nor sorrow born
In silver bound, Beneath the ground,
I am the Spiral Horn.

( a very old, stunningly beautiful and emotional piece of writing that contains many deep truths)

Cycles of Awakening

“In truth we Live, In life we Reveal”

As we all know very well, life has a way of always going forwards with hopefully us with it, and of course what is meant to be surely will be. We as individuals do need to constantly move forward regardless of whatever else is going on around us, especially within the lives of others. In order to tread the universal foothills in search of knowledge we have to be very aware of the pitfalls that stem from the everyday lives of others, pitfalls that only serve to hold us back, imprisoning us in the mundane. For at the end of the day we are all living our own very special and individual lives and not the lives of anybody else. Life is a gift upon a true path of learning and to waste it would surely be improper. Do not let the ups and downs of the world or the problems of others around you, mar your own view of life, do not let the misfortunes of others cloud your visions, for by doing so you are wasting away your own precious gift, a gift too precious to measure. We all have our unique paths of destiny to complete; we all have our own journeys to walk and to stand still upon the shores of time is not what we were created for.

Humans are individuals, originally created with a purpose to their ‘gods’, yet some (known as ‘traits’) were gifted with a far higher purpose and with tutouring and teaching have the potential to evolve above and beyond the plan intended for non traits. The world, the universe can become a greater place of learning and knowledge of the true old ways. And thus in time we, as traits,  will learn where we came from, whom we really are and how we evolved and can evolve; this is a great gift of truth in itself. Those with sight and insight know this, are aware of what is around them. They know how to use their gifts while those that ‘just are’ will always ‘just be’; forever in the dark without even being aware of this very fact. Many humans are in prison but have no idea of this fact.

So then, strive upwards upon the ladder towards the ‘stars’ for it is there that the truths of our ancestors are to be found. The earthly plain is home for just a very short cycle and as we know all cycles must begin and then end, but with the final end cycle fast approaching we know that we can thus make way for a brand new beginning. It is well known that all new beginnings must first have an ending – so as to complete the cycle. Those who learn, who do not stand still in time, those who evolve above and beyond their perceived humanity into a future of truths and revelations will surely be a part of the new cycle; a new dawn to be fully embraced by those who dare step over the threshold. It is a challenge, it is a big dare and in reality only a few will take this final step and rise like a phoenix from out of the flames of chaos.

There are those around who can open the doors, who can lead those with insight, perception and hidden gifts into a future unknown previously by most, but the few can become the many for those of The Way. Great truths require great leaders, needing  those who dare to tread the road less travelled, yet they are not always whom one thinks they are. We share LIGHT and truth with those who truly seek. We are family bonded and bound by the blood ties of centuries past, ties that take us into the future, always moving with the universal tides and to the rhythm of our own dear hearts. Our life is our joy and our joy is in sharing to all who come through our doors seeking the wonderful truths of life.

Templar Teachings from ‘The Keeper of Scrolls’

Come my love…..

Come my love and meet me upon the lip of midnight.
Come my love and dance upon the edge of velvet night
And if you dare to dance my dance
I’ll take you into darkness true.
I promise I will not sup much
Or steal from you that precious thing of which you value so.
Come my love, come meet me when all mortal time runs out
And when the tides are running high
Come take my hand,
Come dance my dance,
Come waltz with me upon the land of precious time.
I’ll not sup much
I promise you.
I’ll let you dance your dance of dance while standing on the edge
And if you come to me with love,
I’ll maybe sup just one sup
As you whirl and spin upon the night times’ edge.
Come to me my love of love.
Come embrace my spell so pure.
We’ll dance till midnight claims your soul in a land I know so well.
Come close my love and kiss me sweet and then I’ll sup,
Just one sup;
A sup of life so true.

DEW OF THE SEA:

Within the Craft path of the Serpent Priesthood (the Ansar) as within many magical paths, the knowledge of sacred herbs is given. On this path not only is the connection to the earthly plane taught but also of how each herb and stone connects on a universal/multiversal level to a much bigger picture. Everything connects and interacts, everything is of vibration and can act for or against depending on how it is used and from which aspect; different combinations of sacred herbs and stones have different purposes and work on a magical and alchemical level on the mundane plane as well as the spiritual.

Rosemary has been used by practitioners almost since the dawn of time and its heady, pungent, invigorating aroma can transport you back in time to a far distant land, to a time when rosemary was burned in the temples of Greece as an offering to the Goddess and God. The Greeks dedicated rosemary to Apollo, their solar deity, who was acknowledged as the god of medicine, poetry and prophecy. Rosemary is also connected to the snake (Sibbu) and the sword thus connecting directly to the Serpent Priesthood and the teachings thereof. Rosmarinus means ‘dew of the sea’ thus also connecting to the goddess Amulug, Mary Magdalene, Kiam and the universe at every level of understanding through time. The connection to Mary Magdalene who is also known in truth as Kiam is most significant.

Rosemary is a member of the mint family, growing up to one and a half meters tall; its leaves are evergreen and needle-like and it thrives in the

Dew of the Sea

sun soaked shores of the Mediterranean. Breathe in deeply that enticing aroma and be transported to the sun drenched shores of your own imagination. Rosemary was one of the earliest plants to be used for food, medicine and of course magic. The country people of ancient Greece did not have access to any prepared incense, so burnt Rosemary in sprigs on their shrines and it thus became known as the incense bush. Today, gently smoldering the sprigs on charcoal is still the quickest and easiest way of using fragrant rosemary as incense.

Traces of rosemary have also been found in Egyptian tombs which is not at all surprising considering that the Egyptians knew a thing or two about magic… During the middle ages it was used to smoke out devils during exorcism and it was also burnt in sick rooms as a fumigant for many centuries. Rosemary continued to be burnt in hospital wards in France until the present century and was abandoned at about the same time that modern research had actually proved its antiseptic properties.

Rosemary can delay or prevent putrefaction in meat but we are unable to tell if it was first used in cooking for the flavour or to preserve the meat, for in distant times there was no means of keeping meat refrigerated in hot climates. Rosemary has a long folk magic tradition as a love stimulator and many ancient charms and spells use rosemary for this reason. Bridal wreaths were entwined with fresh rosemary and bridesmaids gave sprigs to the groom to symbolize love and loyalty. The plant has and still is used in countless rituals to promote love. Nowadays we can inhale the scent and visualize its subtler energies bringing love and transformation into our lives.

It seems like rosemary has always been in our lives yet to discover its magical properties we have to find how to open a secret door to the abundant garden within….. Aroma is an important tool for magic and ritual as it facilitates the unlocking of subtle pathways to the subconscious. In ritual we transcend our daily lives and become one with our gods and goddesses. A specially prepared incense wafting around the temple or sacred space can quickly evoke an atmosphere of divine worship. In spell casting and magical rites the power to cause change in ones lives can be greatly enhanced by the appropriate incense intensifying and charging the atmosphere.

Rosemary can be used fresh or dried for incense making and the essential oil can be used as an ingredient in oil blends. The ruling planet of rosemary is the sun, its element is fire and its gender is masculine. Its powers for magical workings and spell craft are that of protection, love, lust, exorcism, purification, healing, sleep, youth. It is also burned in order to receive insight and the smoke is inhaled to promote visions. The essential oil can be sprinkled on to cotton wool balls or tissues and taken into exams or placed in a car during long car journeys to aid in concentration and awareness or while at home the oil can be used in a burner for the same refreshing reasons.

Physical Use:
In healing uses rosemary assists the nervous system. It can be made into a into a paste (with olive oil) then added to water for pre-ritual cleansing. Rosemary is used as a representation of union when used within Handfasting Ceremonies, being the suitable replacement of confetti. It is appropriate to use within a Funeral Rite, where onlookers cast the rosemary to the grave. Within the higher degree workings of the Serpent Priesthood, rosemary is the plant that is a part of sacred alchemical and magical combinations.

Magical Use: Rosemary aids intellectual achievements, assists purification, protection, and love. Use rosemary within the Last Rites Service. Rosemary can be used in combinations with other herbs and sacred stones as taught in the Serpent Priesthood as part of a student’s magical training and is part of a sacred alchemical combination within the higher degrees and beyond.

When using herbs for incense making start with simple combinations and then when you feel more confident experiment a bit more. You will soon become familiar with all the correspondences and magical properties. An interesting way to start is to make the appropriate incense for each festival and rites, to be used in your own ceremonies.

Rosemary on its own does make a very divine incense but it also combines very well with other sacred herbs such as sage and lavender. An incense blend which uses half quantities of sage and rosemary or lavender and rosemary (fresh or dried) can be used for purification of the temple, chapel or home and all within including self, clothes, magical tools (if that is your preferred method). It is ideal to burn before a ritual or ceremony of any sort, whilst you are preparing. Let the smoke waft around your temple to cleanse and purify the space. It will create a lovely white smoke that will very easily add the right touch. The aroma is gentle, soothing, almost antiseptic and cleansing in its properties. This incense induces a lovely feeling of relaxation and cannot fail to put anyone in the right frame of mind for ritual, meditation or path working of any description. Please try it, and thoroughly enjoy your experience of Rosemary; the dew of the sea.

Templar Teachings from ‘The Keeper of Scrolls’
.

The Devil and I…..

Betwixt the strokes of the clanging bell

Midnight hangs like a waiting shroud.

There’s a place so dark no shadows fall;

Tis a void amidst the changing years

So go not there for you’ll not return.

Behind the chimes of the old and the new,

Is an alleyway ancient between the realms

And in this place you must not wait

Lest you be seen by those who observe.

Only the brave will want to go.

Only the courageous will want to know.

For this is the land at the end of time;

The forgotten land where the Devil rides out.

If you hear him, you must close your eyes.

If you see his chariot above the skies

You must wish three wishes so he’ll then pass by.

Do not linger and do not look

For if you do, your soul he will pluck.

At the stroke of midnight

Just walk away,

Do not look back

And do not stay.

How do I know this?

How could this be?

Well of course

The Devil and I keep good company…..

The Devil Rides Out...

The Devil Rides Out…

She always thought……

She always thought that she could swim underwater

She always thought that she was strong enough to swim against the tide

She always thought that she would forever exist outside of human dreams

But far too late she realised she was drowning…

She always thought her wings were forged of mighty steel

She always thought she had the ability to fly right into the sun

She always thought she knew exactly how to ride the winds

But she rode the winds straight into the fire…

She never thought that she would actually scorch her beautiful wings

She never thought she would drown alone in the dark night stream

She never thought that her world really was all an illusion

And that the horizon and the dream would always be just that tiny bit out of reach

What then, if she allowed herself to drown?

What then, if she allowed her beautiful steel wings to burn up and melt?

And then what would she be; just who would she be?

Alone and lost upon the shores of time the beautiful little fairy took her last earthly breath…

The fens where i grew up, were once a mysterious world apart; a vast land of water and peat bogs splattered with tiny islands where the only way to get around was by lone punts and other such water craft. These were the days before the fens were drained to make way for rich agriculture land. A silent world in which other-worldly mists eerily swirled in and out of the lives of the fishermen, the fowlers and the reed cutters as they endevoured to walk about on wooden stilts when the waters rose dangerously high. Even now long after the drainage; the fens do seem to remain a world apart, open, flat, peat blackened and with dykes and embankments that weave their way silently across a ghostly landscape. The feel of a once vast water world still lingers on in the collective memories of today’s fenland folk and many tales are told of witches, sprites, boggarts, will o’the wisp and other strange folk. The many strange place names of the fenland towns and villages that often suggest the ‘ways of old’, seem to have their own tales to tell still waiting to be told. Echoes of the past are everywhere and often time itself appears to have stood totally still. But what of the fenland people themselves and the real, often hard lives they once lived? I hope to be able to give you an insight, a brief glimpse into the winter customs and traditions of the fens.

The Fen Skaters

At the turn of the last century it was still very much a hard way of life with little or no luxuries, especially at Christmas. Home made paper chains and holly would decorate the sparse rooms at Christmas and piles of logs filled the hearths and the rooms would always have a smokey air about them. It was always crisply cold outside (or so it seemed) and everyone huddled around the crackling hearth after a long hard day working on the land. Christmas trees, if you could afford one and many couldn’t, would be decorated with sugar mice, fir cones, and even real tiny candles on metal clip holders. Lots and lots of shimmering tinsel would be hung over the tree, something the children always loved doing and even clumps of cotton wool were scattered on the branches to imitate snow. The aroma of fresh pine filled the household but one never dressed the tree before christmas eve and on coming downstairs on christmas morning, gasps of delight would fill the house as the children of the household caught first sight of the glittering bedecked tree. It was as if a magical winter fairyland had indeed appeared before one and all. Homemade cakes and puddings filled the kitchen shelves and the luxury of the day would be a box of dates, a dish of nuts, an orange or an apple, all washed down with ginger wine. Usually the Christmas dinner would be a goose or a chicken, plucked and fully prepared in the home kitchen on Christmas Eve, after the children were sent to bed early. It was nothing unusual in those days for the women folk to be up to their elbows in giblets! On Christmas evening the pleasures were simple – lots of roast chestnuts, hot mince pies and a cup of cocoa, whilst playing dominos, draughts and the good old favourite, ispy.

The Old Yule or Christmas tree

My own personal memories of growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, were of decorating our real christmas tree bought from Ely market or the local greengrocers, which my dad always carried home on his pushbike. The trees always smelled so fresh and the whole house permeated with the refreshing smell of pine. I remember decorating our tree, which always stood in the front room, in front of the window. The front rooms in those days were always kept ‘for best’ so one always knew it was a special occasion when it was time to dress the tree. I remember dressing the tree with pink and white sugar mice and shiny glass baubles and icicles; we used real candles on the tree in those days, in metal clip-on candle holders, although i don’t really remember actually lighting them! And i have just remembered (in 2026), the little metal clip on birds with the flexible tails – i could i have forgotten those! I remember covering the boughs of the tree with old fashioned shimmering tinsel strands and slewing cotton wool balls all over it too. Paper christmas angels lovingly created at school were also placed upon the tree. Of course we children always enjoyed making our own decorations, including seemingly miles and miles of paper chains all stuck together individually by us children working hard at it in the kitchen. The best decorations however, were always saved for the front room. I remember that very front room always being so chilly and the smokey smell of ‘coke’ fuel wafting around the room as it slowly warmed up, all being a part of those christmas memories.

In those days the ladies of the house always gutted and prepared the christmas bird the night before, usually chicken or goose, and we children delighted in being horrified at the bloody site of our mother being ‘up to her elbows’ in giblets and blood! My brother remembers asking our mother to cut open the bird’s crop so he could see what it had been eating. I do remember one time when my Nan visited from London and seeing both Nan and Mum in the old white-washed walled scullery plucking frantically away at a large white goose, while the scullery floor grew thick with feathers! My brother remembers coming down into the kitchen one night because he couldn’t sleep, only to find our father hard at work making his christmas present  – a wooden hand crafted fort, for him! All of this would have been carried out on christmas eve. I remember too the aroma of the sausage rolls and mince pies cooking and of course on christmas morning the smell of the wonderful herbiness of the christmas bird all ready and cooking in the gas oven! My brother also remembers things like the clip on candles and the home made eggnog, which latter became known as ‘snowballs’, interestingly he remembers how decadent it was for a young boy to see both his mother and father with these ‘continental’ drinks.

We placed gifts from friends and family tantalizingly around the base of the tree and were always allowed to open just one present on christmas eve, which we did with great excitement and anticipation. Upstairs though we hung up a large white pillowcase at the end of the bed and also one of our own knitted knee-socks. I always loved to receive books and painting materials, and i remember two of my best ever presents being my wind up Hornby train set and my conjurers set. It was a simpler time in those days, but very precious. In our little knitted stocking we would find small gifts, chocolates, nuts and tangerines, maybe a packet of wax crayons and some pencils; these items simple in themselves always seems so magical and precious on christmas morning.

Nan and Grandad from London were often with us in Ely for christmas, yet Dad often arrived late for christmas dinner, as he worked at the Ely Sugar Beet Factory and this time was the busiest time of the year, for it was the time of the sugar beet ‘campaign’ and dad worked shifts as did all the workers there.  They worked hard on the sugar beet harvest and there were no special compensations – christmas or no christmas! For a tea-time treat mum often made a snowman out of an old preserving croc which she would cover with sheets of cotton wool and created a round head out of cotton wool with a hat on it. She would then fill it with extra treats for our annual tea-time lucky dip which was all great fun. In the evening i remember toasting chestnuts on the open fire on the old black coal shovel and watching them hiss and burst! The adults and older children drank egg nog, while the younger ones fizzy corona, and we enjoyed a feast of dates, nuts and tangerines; only usually obtained at christmas time! Of course there was no tv in those days but we did have a radio and thrilled to the seasonal dramas which usually included a good old children’s drama. If we were to play games it would have been i spy, passing the parcel or musical chairs. All in all on looking back they were very simple days, but very, very magical and special days too. There was a tangible ‘feeling’ in the air on christmas day, in those far off childhood times. I don’t know if it was because i always saw the magic in everything, but what i do know is that i picked up on the magic at the time and remembered the magic as it was, not just as a rose coloured memory looking back. Simple time yet very precious times that somehow seem to be from another almost forgotten world these days…..

A hard fenland winter always meant good skating though and 1814 was one such a winter, when the usually sluggish River Cam became a beautiful sheet of smooth, shinning ice, all the way down to Ely. It was a strange sight to see the skaters in their caps and gowns on their steel propellers, whirling away under Clare Hall, Gerard’s Hostel and Trinity Bridges, their usually formal gowns streaming out behind them. The fens used to produce some of the finest speed skaters in the country and anyone who has lived in the fens for a long time will no doubt be familiar with the tradition of fen skating. These events were an important event and regularly drew huge crowds and according to a local newspaper report of the time, over six thousand people gathered on Whittlesey Mere on the Monday after Christmas in 1840, both to skate themselves and to watch 16 of the best runners of the day compete for the prize money of £10. An exciting event in every ones eyes, mark my words. And the only accidents reported afterwards were damaged noses and darkened eyes in consequence of fouling or the skaters running into each other!

The little fenland village of Welney boasts the honour of having the fastest speed skaters of all time. All of them having learnt their art on that swampy piece of ground known as Welney Wash which floods every winter. In the 1890’s skaters came from as far afield as Norway and Holland. In those days the winters certainly lived up to their name and produced enough ice each year to last long enough for the fenland skaters to acquire great skills and Cambridgeshire was indeed an ideal nursery for skaters because of it’s many long, open stretches of water. And the fen folks would often use the ice to go about their daily business, especially when the roads so often became impassable. What a breathtaking sight it must have been to see these skaters flying over the ice at a speed of nine or ten miles an hour as part of their daily lives. Indeed the ice became a lifeline; linking village to village and skaters could easily cover forty to seventy miles a day. My own grandfather who hailed from Wicken was also a fenland skater, indeed a champion of his day. His rusty old skates, left hanging on a hook in the back shed, would have been taken down and worn again with pride as he honed his skills by skating all the way from Wicken in the fens all the way down to the River Cam in Cambridge.

The Fen Skaters

Many more tales are told of the fenland skaters and of individual achievements and of weeks and weeks of solid frost – what would we make of it now I wonder and just how would we cope? It somehow seems kind of fun to get the chance to try this almost forgotten fenland sport. Interestingly enough, the very cold winter of 2009 through to 2010 again saw the revival of the fenland skaters. For the first time in decades the fens froze over allowing skaters onto the ice in areas such as Earith in Cambridgeshire. Long forgotten skills were revived and skaters who thought they would never experience the thrill of the open ice again took out of storage their old skates and found themselves competing with old and young alike again for the title of speed skater of the fens. Let’s hope then that this tradition along with many others, continues to make a welcomed return every few years, thus keeping alive the unique history of the watery fenlands.

In early January of 2026, the fenland fields and washes froze over once again bringing skaters out from far and wide, some traveling many miles to enjoy the miles of frozen fields on which to skate. Some were professional speed skaters and the sight of all those skaters were an amazing sight to behold. However health and safety prevailed with many messages going out of where and where not to skate. Welney and Upware were once again the most popular spots proving once again that fenland skating is indeed still very much alive and well.

Loyalty and Commitment

“In perfect love, In perfect trust”

Oaths taken on the metaphysical spheres will always remain binding on the mundane..

dsc00107-1

It is very easy in todays modern world to fail to consider, or even to not understand subjects such as loyalty, commitment and the taking of oaths, for they are quite deep and profound topics for many folks and yet relate totally to life today. Whatever one does in life, it is beyond a doubt that if personal commitment is not one hundred percent, then one is never ever going to get anywhere or achieve any goals; more so in Craft than anywhere else. Like-wise with loyalty, one must be loyal; above all to ones-self and to ones chosen path in life, whatever that path may be. Whatever one is involved in and whatever one hopes to achieve from that involvement, one is simply betraying ones-self if one falls short. One is of course betraying too, the trust that others have invested  in you.

Loyalty and commitment often go very much hand in hand with trust, in so many aspects of life. By being loyal and committed to what one desires on a personal level, one is also showing/proving that one can be trusted. Words alone are not enough, for it is in ones actions alone that the truth of loyalty and commitment are to be found displayed. How many times has one experienced the ‘could haves, would haves, should haves’ of this life, the people who when told of the endeavours and achievements of others are all too full of what they would have or should have done in similar circumstances, to the extent that it becomes very boring to hear and one tends to switch off from listening. For heavens sake i want to shout, “if you could have; then why didn’t you?” Empty words from empty vessels I fear…..

So then, following the path of Craft, of a Knight, how does loyalty and commitment relate to this? It is of course a lifetime of commitment, of ever-deepening loyalty and trust for all followers of the path, and each student upon embarking on the path will take many very profound and deep oaths; oaths that are bound in the metaphysical world as well as the mundane world. Those ‘who see and observe’ will oversee the oaths taken and will grant ‘passage through’ for those who are true of heart and mind. The oaths are never to be taken frivolously and never ever taken lightly, for the meaning of the oaths reach far beyond the every day aspects of life and yet at the same time will also see each student through their mundane as well as spiritual lives, if of course they listen to the messages contained within the oaths. While each student is free to leave the path at will at any time, their oaths will always remain binding and can never be ‘untaken’, never forgotton.

In the early degrees the commitment would be to attend meetings regularly, to be punctual upon the sphere of time, to study and to engage in Craft pursuits, carrying out all the tasks requested by the Preceptor. Loyalty is to the path and to Craft, to ones brothers and sisters of the path and to staying loyal and committed to each oath taken. Loyalty and commitment is in living the path as taught; having faith above and beyond the mundane and to always ‘walk your walk’. True followers will attain this naturally yet for others it may take time, patience and perseverance,  but if not, if loyalty and commitment are hard to attain, then perhaps another path would be more appropriate? As time goes by loyalty and commitment to ones ‘family’, becomes second to non, above and beyond the mundane and it is in the executing of these acts that others, especially ‘family’  know they can trust you, for every morsel of trust has to be fully earned.

One can set an example as to enlighten others to the true wisdom and beauty of Craft and can support all those interested and to always help them through any challenges that come along, but ultimately it is up to each student to tread their own path. My own journey and commitment has been a true revelation to me as I have never committed myself one hundred percent and beyond to anything else ever before. With my deepening commitment also came proof of loyalty, for as i learnt the Old Ways, I also learnt about myself and learnt that I could be true, loyal and committed to that which I knew to be the ultimate truths, to my very oaths in fact. Loyalty and commitment do work both ways though for in proving one is loyal and committed the barriers of time and space will be broken down as the Old Ones, who forever watch, know they can come to you as you journey to them. But it is something that, as mentioned before, is never to be taken lightly, one can never rest on ones laurels as it were.

When i took my oaths i never spoke the words lightly, i always had complete understanding of exactly what they meant on all the spheres and of whom would be listening. I always studied the words very carefully before-hand as often the words spoken contained within them a ‘sacrifice,’ a giving up of something, often an important aspect of the mundane and familiar world. Therefore no oath can ever be taken lightly or simply skimmed over; those that fail to understand this, simply fall by the wayside – yet those oaths will always bind, for the power of words upon time and space is magnificant, but often not considered.

I have complete trust in those who have tutored me, something that goes way beyond the fact that when I step over the precipice I know I will be caught ; it is not that at all, it is in the knowing and the knowledge that when I do step over; I can and will fly. It is something that has been instilled within me; a gift given. The loyalty, the commitment, the trust, it all goes without saying that with my passion and desire I can thus pass all this on to the world and instill within all, the lessons I have learnt. I do try hard to walk my walk and talk my talk yet it is through continuing hard work, dedication, loyalty and commitment and of course, great joy that I am able to do so. My personal journey, along with a few good old bumps now and again has proved to be a wonderful ride, a blooming amazing ride in fact and one that I forever embrace and one I never ever want to end.
